Integrity is Part of the Job Description

Every company talks about its values.
The real test comes when honoring those values costs something.
We recently began a search with a client who has been an exceptional partner to our team. As we do with every search, we started with a detailed intake conversation - not simply reviewing a job description but working to understand the entire opportunity.
We discussed the must-haves and nice-to-haves, the current plant environment, team dynamics, anticipated challenges, and what would make the opportunity attractive to the right person. Most importantly, the hiring team was fully aligned and committed to being transparent with us throughout the search.
Once that foundation was established, our team began identifying and approaching passive candidates who appeared to fit the role.
Recruiting passive talent is rarely as simple as sending one message. It often takes several touchpoints through email, phone calls, text messages, and follow-up conversations. Candidates understandably have questions, and we are happy to provide the information they need to make an informed decision.
One individual appeared to be an excellent fit. We answered multiple rounds of questions and continued following up as he considered the opportunity.
When we asked whether he was ready to move forward, he told us he did not want to “apply twice” for the same position. We subsequently learned that, after our initial contact and conversations, he had applied directly to the company without disclosing our involvement.
Our client immediately assured us that if the candidate were selected, they would honor our introduction and consider him our placement. That alone demonstrated the fairness and integrity of the partnership.
But what happened during the interview said even more.
The interview reportedly went extremely well. The hiring manager believed the candidate had the skills and experience to succeed. During the conversation, the candidate was given more than one natural opportunity to explain how he had learned about the position. The hiring team even referenced that they had partnered with Expert Connections on the search.
Still, he did not acknowledge our involvement.
Ultimately, the client chose not to move forward.
The decision was not based on the candidate’s technical qualifications. Those were strong.
It was based on honesty and judgment.
The client recognized that how someone handles a situation during the hiring process may offer insight into how they will handle difficult situations after joining the organization. If transparency is missing when the stakes seem relatively small, what might happen when the stakes are much higher?
Choosing not to hire an otherwise qualified candidate is never easy - especially in a challenging talent market. But this hiring team demonstrated that its values are more than words displayed on a wall or included in an employee handbook.
They were willing to protect their standards, even when doing so meant potentially losing an excellent skillset.
As recruiters, we invest significant time in earning the trust of both clients and candidates. We understand that candidates may discover opportunities through multiple channels, and there can occasionally be genuine confusion about how an introduction was made. What matters is communicating openly so everyone can handle the situation fairly.
This experience reminded us of something important:
Skills may earn someone an interview, but character remains part of the qualification.
It also reinforced how much a truly ethical client partnership is worth. When a company treats its recruiting partners with fairness, communicates transparently, and holds itself and its candidates to the same high standard, it tells us a great deal about how that organization operates.
Those are the clients we are proud to represent - and the companies we feel confident introducing to candidates.
