Leadership Doesn’t End When the Workday Does

Leadership is often discussed in boardrooms, strategy decks, and KPI reviews.

What’s talked about less is what leadership looks like after hours.

My husband is a CEO for an automotive supplier, responsible for multiple plant locations across the U.S. and Mexico. His role spans people leadership, operational performance, safety, customer expectations, and long-term stability. It also involves constant travel – often over weekends.

I run a recruiting agency focused on manufacturing and engineering leadership. My work doesn’t stop when I close my laptop either.

What many don’t see is how leadership bleeds into home life.

The stress comes home.

The decisions linger.

The conversations continue long after dinner.

What makes our dynamic different is that neither of us came into leadership from the outside.

Both of our careers started at automotive suppliers. We worked in the trenches - inside plants, programs, and operations.

In fact, we met at work.

That shared foundation matters.

It means we understand what it feels like when production pressure is real, when staffing gaps create ripple effects, and when leadership decisions impact people on the floor just as much as those in the boardroom.

When one partner travels frequently, home responsibilities shift. There’s a long list of things to catch up on when he’s back- the “honey-dos,” the family logistics, the compressed time together. At the same time, there’s an unspoken understanding that the weight he carries is real: being responsible for employees, their safety, their livelihoods, and the performance of entire operations.

Leadership is an emotional rollercoaster.

And when both partners lead, you learn quickly that support isn’t optional - it’s essential.

We listen.

We talk things through.

We challenge each other.

We learn from each other.

Most importantly, we remind each other why leadership matters.

At its core, manufacturing isn’t just about producing parts, hitting takt times, or meeting customer demand. It’s about creating environments where people feel safe, supported, and respected - even when pressure is high and margins are tight.

Living alongside manufacturing leadership - and having lived it ourselves - has shaped how I show up professionally.

It’s why I approach recruiting differently. Hiring isn’t just a transaction or a race to fill a role. It’s a long-term decision that impacts leadership bandwidth, plant culture, team morale, and operational stability. The wrong hire doesn’t just miss a target - it adds stress to leaders who are already carrying a full load.

Understanding that reality changes how you recruit.
Recruitment built on real-world manufacturing experience!
Recruitment built on real-world manufacturing experience!

It means asking better questions.

It means respecting the weight of leadership decisions.

It means partnering with clients, not just servicing requisitions.

Leadership Day is a reminder that strong leadership is rarely a solo act. Behind every effective leader is a support system - partners, families, teams, and trusted advisors - all helping to keep the wheels turning.

I’m proud of the leader my husband is.

And I’m proud to support manufacturing leaders who are building organizations meant to last.

Because leadership doesn’t end when the workday does - and neither should the support behind it.
